| Kiefer Sutherland alias Jack Bauer
After 20 years of hard working in the movie business Kiefer Sutherland (40) enjoys the biggest success of his career...on the little screen. As Jack Bauer, the hero who is literally 'the saver of the day' in the hit series 24, he plays the role of his life.
“It's an unbelievable luck,” he tells, “I’m doing this work for 20 years now and I've never had this experience before.” De star, single father with one child, signed recently a contract of 40 million dollar to let the action going for the next three years. Other then many TV-shows 24 seem to get better with the years. Especially the fifth season has been very good regaled bu the public and the reviewers: the show and Kiefer Sutherland received an Emmy. They couldn't realize the very high expectations for the sixth season, which came out on DVD recently. The critics, with LA times in front, named it a repeat of steps made before, characters who played a role weren't good cast according to the spoiled public, the many torture scenes became over-the-top en people were disappointed with the lack of turning-point. The producers of the show heard the criticism and admit that it was almost impossible to overpower the fifth season, or even equalize. But they listened to the feedback and went active with it. They made a promise that the seventh season will at least equalize the fifth season or overpower. In prospect of that and while the sixth season was still running, Watch spoke with the man who plays the leading role, but as he tells is not carrying the series, Kiefer Sutherland. Dressed in a stylish black suit, black shirt and grey stripe tie he radiates a stubborn determined that makes him believable as the unstoppable terrorist agent.
How many days can Jack handle? That's up to the audience. II find it delightful to make this series and I'm happy that they make me do this long. Every year we learn something from the past, which made the show's quality grow. But the true star is as I have always said the idea behind the series, the period of real-time. I think that 24 will survive me.
How did you experience winning the Emmy after 5 nominations? You can prepare your speech as good as you can, but when you here your name calling and you go from the seat to the stage it's all gone. Your nervous while your looking at all those people that you would love to work with in the future and that you admire. But happily I saw my father (Donald Sutherland) and that made me calm. I was overjoyed that our director, Jon Cassar, did also win because he is a big and undervalue talent and has directed most episodes. When finally 24 won as best series it was completely an unforgettable evening.
How would you describe the topic of the series? We have always seen it as political, but since last season people start to talk about it in political terms. Joel Surnow, the inventor, is surprised that left and right is demanding the series. In season sixth we make some statements that are political loaded. The writers have done that intentionally and I think that they are talking about a very interesting situation in our society.
Does real Jack Bauer exist? Absolutely. 24 is a TV-show comes out of imagination, but there are man and woman everywhere in the world that work very hard. Many of those Special Force types are combined in this character. We hear the things that have happened but, if you ask me contented, we don't hear the things that haven't happened, sometimes closely, with all the hard work these people do.
How far has the real events influenced the interest for the series? The beginning of 24 came almost at the same time as the awful events of 9/11, which was bizarre. We are all startled by the terrorist threats. I think it changed the world strongly since that awful day and the series shows that.
Can you tell us more about what will happen with the movie version of 24? We want to make it en are concentrated to make it in 2009. The essential difference between the series and a movie is that in the movie the 24 day format will have to be made in 2 hours. It will be for the first time we don't make it in real-time.
Why you think the movie will work in that different way? When we will shoot the movie after the television version has been on for long the characters are sharp defined and the feeling for the series will be deep rooted. As a result of that the public will understand the characters totally and they will have certain expectations. We will give the best we can to suffice those expectations. The quality has to be just as high as the TV-show, but it has to be different.
Why do you all want to make a movie when the TV-show is so successful? For the TV-show we're making every three weeks two episodes.merci jade et benny

| Ici est la deuxième part de l'article, merci à Jade et Benny: With a movie we would have three months to create 2 hours of material. In that way the creative staff members, the director, the writers and the producers, can concentrate more. And making a movie with a clarifying ending will be exciting not only for us, but for the audience as well. What I like the most is that we will make the movie while the series is still running. Why is that so exciting? Everybody compares our idea with X-files: The Movie. But with them, the series already ended. I think the movie and the series can exist with each other. And when that happens, it is possible that it will change the impetus between television and movie. That makes the project very interesting. Are you working on other projects right now? Together with FOX I created a production company and we are working on a few exciting things. We are building something. For the first time I didn't shoot a movie during the summer break from 24 last year. I wanted some more time to focus on my role on 24. We noticed that making the first episode for 24 was getting more difficult each year. I wanted to work with the director and the writers to get further ahead for when we started the actual shooting. How do you choose your roles? Everything depends by my mood, what I'm interested in at a certain moment. I've been lucky that I have had many different offers in my career. My choice to make a movie like The Sentinel came from my mood that week and my choice to go on stage for six months with The Glass Menagerie came with a different mood. Why did you, as a movie actor, say yes to a television show? I stopped for a few years because I didn't get the movies I wanted to make and was making movies I didn't enjoy making. I had to stop, take a serious break and think about what I really wanted to do. When I read the script for 24, I saw it as something totally different, which could work or not. If it didn't work it would be a plot that almost no one would see and if it did work it was pure luck... Where you afraid that Hollywood would look down on you because you took the step from movie to television? Television is getting better. Actors and actresses took the step from movie to television when the movie with a twenty million dollar budget disappeared. The movie studios made up there minds that they could make a better movie with a hundred million dollar budget and make it extravagant, rather then risk twenty million dollars on a movie that's only about a plot. If you want to make drama, there are bigger and more interesting opportunities in television. All those drama stories end on television, like you see with ER, NYPD Blue and The Sopranos. What do you watch on television? It's very difficult with my work schedule. I have always been a huge fan of The West Wing and it's a pity that it ended. Just like everybody, I'm crazy about The Sopranos. One of my favorite shows, and it surprises me that it doesn't get more attention, is The Wire. It is beautifully written and is played and shot in a sublime way. That series has an exceptional realism. Are you afraid that people will only see you as Jack Bauer? I'm lucky that I made forty movies before 24, of which ten where top movies. But if this will be the thing people will remember me by, I'm in absolute peace with that. What are your favorites from those forty movies? One of them is Promised Land with Meg Ryan. I made four movies with Joel Schumacher, Lost Boys, Flatliners, A Time To Kill and Phone Booth, that are all fantastic I think. But there were also movies that made me think, "What the hell am I doing?" I'm very much aware that I have made wrong choices with many movies and that I wasn't very good in them. But also in those movies I got a lot of advice and help that helped me later on. Do you think that you had too much success at a young age? In a way I have. I remember thinking when I first started, with movies like Stand By Me, Lost Boys, Young Guns, that it would be more difficult to succeed as an actor. Of course I wasn't aware of all the things that were coming. If I had known that beforehand, I would have told myself to enjoy the success and don't overreact to it. It is an absolute privilege to be able to do this. But, yes, you think at that moment that it’s normal, because you're so young. How was it to grow up in a family of actors? It was a blessing. With the example of my mother (Shirley Douglas) and my father I knew what was good for me as an actor. As a young actor, I knew what I had to strive for, what I needed to try to achieve. And more importantly, I knew that it would come with ups and downs. I saw that happening with my mum and dad. So when it went down very soon with my career, I was better prepared and knew that it wouldn't be the end of my life. It's like you're being hit by a wave. If you don't fight it, you'll be flooded, but I kept standing. When did you know you wanted to become an actor? I was in a stage play with my mother when I was eleven, called Throne of Straw. I found out that I didn't enjoy anything else more then acting. At first I didn't dare tell my parents what I wanted to become. The first job I got was for Amazing Stories, directed by Steven Spielberg. In 1986 I got to make At Close Range, Stand by Me and a television movie titled Trapped in Silence. After that came Lost Boys. My life would never be the same... | |

| Marie Claire Article What attracted you to River Queen?
It was a story I wanted to tell. It was a film about war - the Colonial-Maori war, which was an interesting conflict. More people switched sides in that war than in any other conflict. Maoris switched sides to Colonials because they had problems within their own sides, and the Colonials switched sides because they had terrible problems with what the British army was doing to these people. It showed really the breakdown of two ideologies clashing on a political level. I thought it was a very interesting perspective on war. It's very rarely black-and-white, if ever. And there has to be a much better way in our society to resolve conflict.
Given your success with 24, are you a glass half-full or half-empty type person?
Depends on the situation. I've been up and down in this career. I've had incredible highs and times when I couldn't get a job. 24 is one of those incredible experiences you'll just never be able to repay. From a creative perspective, it's given me more confidence as an actor than I've ever had - and out of confidence comes innovation! And I promise you one day I'm going to be innovative - I swear to it! On a job level, we do this because we want people to see what we're doing. I'm grateful to the audience for watching the show as long as they have. It's been an incredibly positive experience.
When are you happiest?
Before I go to sleep. I do so many things - from horse-riding to hockey to skiing. I've never been through a whole day where I haven't been happy and I've never been through a whole day where I haven't been frustrated. I go up and down!
Do you discuss the business much with your father?
We don't talk about it a whole lot. We don't get to see each other enough anyway, so when we do, he wants to know about my daughter. We talk about my brothers. We talk about him and Francine. Our family stuff. He's been very supportive - apparently he likes 24 and he's very funny about that. But the work itself, we don't really talk about it at all.

| Hello magazine'Most Dashing Daddy of 2008' WE declared Kiefer Sutherland, 41, the world's 'Most Dashing Daddy of 2008' in our first annual Father's Day poll. Find out which other celeb hunks figured highly in this week's issue of HELLO! Canada, available on newsstands from Thursday, June 5
Whether he's on the set of 24 as counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, or spending time with his daughter Sarah, 20, during filming breaks, Kiefer Sutherland always looks hunky. So it's no surprise that WE've declared him the 'Most Dashing Daddy of 2008' in hellomagazine.ca reader poll.
WE voted in our thousands for the handsome Canadian dad, who welcomed his lovely daughter into the world when he himself was 20. "I could talk about (fatherhood) forever," he says. "From the fear of it to the joy of it."merci benny
