Sutherland spends ‘24’ cash to launch musician’s career

LOS ANGELES – He has discovered a man named Rocco DeLuca who must be exposed, so Kiefer Sutherland is circumventing the established system.

Using technology to spread word. Traveling to Japan, Iceland, Ireland. And revealing himself, if needed, to complete the mission.

Don’t worry, these aren’t spoilers for the fifth season of “24.” Just a little rock ’n’ rolling side project from the man who plays Jack Bauer. (The terrorist fighter faked his own death at the end of last season’s Day 4, out last week on DVD, but returns to Fox on Jan. 15.)

Three years ago, Sutherland launched his own tiny record label – Ironworks – with a longtime friend, musician and producer Jude Cole.

Since then, let’s just say it hasn’t been all slam-bang everything-happens-in-a-day action.

Sutherland sunk a chunk of his “24” money into building a state-of-the-art studio near Hollywood. Then he and Cole signed DeLuca, a soulful 27-year-old guitarist and singer from Long Beach who thumps a mean dobro.

Steady touring. A bit of recording. Then finally in May, DeLuca’s debut, “i trust you to kill me,” became the label’s first album.

DeLuca sounds a cautious note about having a TV star as his most visible cheerleader.

“It’s not bad. His heart is in the right place. He knows it’s a credible thing and I think he’s being delicate with that,” DeLuca said. “Being a Hollywood person just in general there’s a lot of compromising that goes on – in the arts, period.”

A revamped version of his CD will get wider distribution next year after Sutherland follows DeLuca and his band The Burden to Europe over the Christmas holiday to shoot a rock documentary. (They already shot in Japan over the Thanksgiving holiday.)

The two-hour flick will be directed by French filmmaker Manuel Poirier and Sutherland says it’ll be distributed at least on European TV.

Franchement il est quand même phénoménal ce Kiefer. Plus j'en apprends sur lui, et plus j'ai envie d'en apprendre. En tous cas, il sait ce qu'il veut, et il l'obtient presque toujours. C'est une qualité admirable.

NAMM: Kiefer Sutherland talks music and guitars

Far away from the throngs of music fans and musicians roaming the show floor at NAMM on Saturday, I sat in a relatively quiet room with actor Kiefer Sutherland. The topic of conversation today was not television or movies, but rather guitars and music.

It was a big week for Sutherland as Gibson unveiled a special guitar in his honor. The guitar, modeled after Sutherland’s favorite vintage Gibson, a ‘67 ES-335, was one of three unveiled at NAMM — other models included one for Peter Frampton and another for Jimi Hendrix.

“I just love the guitar,” said Sutherland. “Gibson took so much time building it, making sure everything was just right. “This is a guitar you can afford to buy and it sounds so good.”

It was evident very early on in the conversation why Gibson would choose Sutherland to honor with an “Inspired by” series guitar: passion for music. Besides his favorite ‘67 ES-335, 80 percent of Sutherland’s guitar collection is made up of vintage Gibsons — that’s 50 Gibsons in all.

Sutherland had a glint in his eye when he was talking about the new guitar, but his real passion for music showed when we talked about his music label, Ironworks Records.

Formed with musician and producer Jude Cole, Sutherland said the label was in response to changes happening in the industry.

“We saw that the music industry was changing and we felt that it needed to change,” said Sutherland. “We have wanted to do this for a very long time.”

One of the main reasons for building a studio and forming their own record label was to help up and coming bands, something Sutherland doesn’t feel the major labels do enough of these days because they represent so many acts.

“We saw so many phenomenal Rock ‘n Roll bands that were not getting signed,” said Sutherland. “We really needed to start looking outside the box.”

Sutherland said Ironworks would represent one or two (three at the very most) bands a year — that’s it, no more. This he said would allow them to focus on all the things they need to do to make that band successful.

“There are three things we need to do for a band. We need to make a great record; we need to get the record played; and we need to find an audience for the live shows,” said Sutherland.

If that means pounding the pavement to get people to see one of his acts, then that’s what they’ll do. Listening to Sutherland's plan of attack for the label you got the feeling that it was very much a grassroots effort — you could also tell from his determination, that he was not going to fail and neither were the bands he represents.

Oui je crois que Kim l'avait dit dans une interview récente...Donc Kiefer travaille avec un français...va bien finir par venir en France !! :hehe:

Kiefer flashes some skin at the honky-tonk women

TV/movie star Kiefer Sutherland not only makes documentaries about rock stars, but he also parties like one.

Kiefer, in town for the Nashville Film Festival, rocked out with his posse at Lower Broadway honky-tonk Robert's Western World Sunday night until early yesterday morning.


Kiefer got there around 11 p.m. and almost immediately went onstage to sing Bob Dylan hit Knockin' on Heaven's Door. (Not bad at all, according to some folks there.)

Soon after Kiefer hit the stage, the slow Sunday night Robert's crowd quadrupled.

Kiefer hung out a lot with his peeps on the second floor, but he waded into the crowd several times and apparently was quite nice about posing for pictures and/or signing autographs for those who wanted them.

He wasn't really mobbed, though. Folks tended to give him lots of space, and Kiefer took advantage of that at one point to dance unimpeded with one of his peeps.

His skin flash came around midnight when a bartender wanted to give Kiefer a Robert's T-shirt. Kiefer went behind the bar to accept, and he immediately whipped off his T-shirt and put on the Robert's T-shirt.

As you might imagine, this generated quite a bit of noise and cell phone camera flashes from the ladies in the crowd.

Kiefer ended up clearing out around 2:30 a.m., just a few hours before he got on a plane for L.A., where he was expected to restart taping his Fox hit show 24 right away.

Before his Broadway bar bash, Kiefer went to a bit more of a buttoned down party Sunday afternoon at the home of Music Row manager Ken Levitan and his Metro judge wife, Gloria Dumas.

In the house: Trace Adkins, Big Kenny of Big & Rich, Two-Foot Fred, rock band Kings of Leon, Brad Paisley, Lonestar, Jessi Alexander, Jon Randall, Mindy Smith and some Titans, bunches of music industry folks and agents from William Morris Agency. That's the agency responsible for getting Kiefer to select Nashville for the world premiere of I Trust You to Kill Me, his rock documentary about his new artist, Rocco DeLuca, on his new label.

Everyone at the party kept their shirts on.
